The course requires you to specialise in teaching one of the following up to A Level:
- Materials (Formerly Resistant Materials)
- Electronic and Communications Technology (formerly Systems and Control)
There is no single direct degree applicable to successful candidates who become trainee teachers in Design & Technology. Degree specialisms listed below are regarded as highly suitable, however, this is a guide only:
- Food nutrition, food products, catering
- Textiles with evidence of 3D work
- Architecture, product design, furniture design, 3D design
- Engineering, control systems, electronics
- Graphic design with evidence of 3D work
Some applicants hold a degree in a totally different subject. If this is the case you need to submit evidence that you are able to:
- Use personal skills to make products of quality in either food, textiles, resistant materials or systems and control
- Recognise the importance of design in our society
- Communicate through a variety of methods including sketching and ICT
Subject sessions normally take place at The Cotswold School on a Thursday afternoon but as D&T requires a diverse range of facilities, some sessions are held in other partnership schools.
In January and April, some sessions will be led by a subject tutor from the University of Bristol who will introduce the PGCE assignments on curriculum practice and curriculum research. The University of Bristol does not offer its own DT PGCE so these are specially designed for GITEP.
Trainees start the year with three weeks of professional studies, a programme of lectures, workshops and expert speakers, to give a context to the course. By the end of September trainees start their “Parent 1” placement and will be in school full time until mid-December.
There are another two weeks of professional studies either side of Christmas. In January trainees start their “Twin” placement in a second school. There are more professional studies weeks before Easter then trainees return to their first school for their “Parent 2” placement. The final placement includes an enhancement week to give opportunities to experience particular aspects of teaching.
The Cotswold School
Matt Smith holds a degree in Interior Architecture and is a highly experienced teacher of Design & Technology. He is currently the second in department at The Cotswold School.
Matt is a specialist in Materials Technology and in Food and Catering. Over recent years he has taken on the lead role in The Cotswold School’s Food provision.
Through his current and previous roles he has been heavily involved in the training and mentoring of PGCE students and Newly Qualified Teachers and is, himself, a former GITEP trainee.
An enthusiastic networker, Matt has developed valuable relationships with a variety of businesses and education providers. This has helped him implement a number of successful Design & Technology initiatives, while enriching Teaching and Learning at both secondary and primary levels.
Matt is an Honorary Teaching Fellow of the University of Bristol.
- A degree (or equivalent) in a Design & Technology-related subject.
- Maths and English at Grade C/Level 4 or above at GCSE.
